Cyberspace: Progressive, or Repressive?

I was chatting with Liz Flynn & Alyssa Arney last night, and Alyssa commented on Instagram’s re-installation & perpetuation of stereotypical Western beauty standards. Later I ranted about Facebook’s trampling of Civil Rights. And of course you can always count on the YouTube comments section for an enormous dose of racism, homophobia & misogyny. I tend to think of Cyberspace as a progressive & empowering place, filled with knowledge, ideas, connection & innovation. But it sure makes a great platform for all that oppression that we’ve struggled so hard for so long to move past. Or maybe it’s wrong to blame all that on Cyberspace. Maybe Cyberspace just holds up a big mirror to who we are.
