    Improving Retention Time

Nice video on Improving YouTube Viewer Retention time:

    1. Interesting, valuable content your audience cares about
    2. As short as possible! Succinct!
    3. Engage! Smile! Connect!
    4. Plenty of B-roll! (change every 3-4 seconds)
    5. Let viewers know right up front what value of video is (if they know what’s coming up it will keep them watching longer)

    Mahsa Soroudi

A conversation with Iranian artist Mahsa Soroudi. Life in Tehran. Immigrating to the United States and Southern California.

The conversation focuses on two of her art projects, “Nature’s Cadence,” and “7,500 Miles.” The first a journey with drought-tolerant succulent plants that paralleled her own “drought” as an immigrant in a foreign land.

7,500 Miles is the distance between Soroudi’s current home in Southern California, and her hometown, Tehran. In this exhibition Soroudi and fellow Iranian expatriate Parisa Ghaderi curate work from a range of Iranian women artists whose art defies Western stereotypes to explore the issues of their own lives and in their own time.

Sending Messages to my Future Self

Amber Case’s Ted Talk on Cyborg Anthropology. And how technology is essentially faster and faster time travel. And ultimately disappears and makes us more human.

Periscope doesn’t care. Except when they do.

Live streaming video app Periscope is a bit over a year old now. In that time it’s exploded onto the scene and created a new ecology. It’s also been the site for massive trolling and harassment, especially of women Periscopers. After a year of complaints, it sure seems like Periscope doesn’t care. Also, curiously, a huge proportion of the trolls seem to be young guys from Turkey. No idea why, but it seems consistent across the months and across victims. Last week Jessica Pike / @Pikeytime came up with a novel solution: when she gets trolled by these guys, she turns her camera on to YouTube videos of men kissing or wrestling. Apparently long streams of harassment are fine with Periscope, but men kissing is over the line. They banned her.

When platforms do care, like Riot Games’ League of Legends, they formed a Player Behavior Team and achieved extraordinary results in reducing “toxic behavior” on their platform.

Just wrote a post, “Art is expensive”, for which I dug up a photo of the Marc Jacobs / Daniel Buren production for Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2013. Which made me remember that amazing runway show again:
